entry #5 (if q_drd_c_dn)
*Naldor settles back into the moss.* Into the Listening, and years enough behind you to hear properly -- you have walked the first of it, and walked it well. There are greater wakings than this down the years: the Entmoot roused, the Old Forest set walking, the whole wild wroth and moving against those who burn it. But that is for a far greater day. Keep listening, friend.
Fare you well, Naldor.
entry #4 (if q_drd_c_s2r)
*He takes the seed back and holds it against his ear a moment, as one listens to a shell.* Fifteen levels, and still listening -- I thought you would keep at it. A seed carried is a beginning; a druid should carry something that answers back. Let me grow this into a staff for you. Shall it be done?
Grow it into a staff. I am ready.
entry #9
*The staff is finished: pale mallorn, the dark seed grown fast into the head, the grain still creeping slowly around it.* There -- the Staff of the Breathing World. Nothing greater is woken in it yet; the Entmoot and the walking of the Old Forest are for a far greater day, when the hour comes round. You have walked the first of the Green Listening. Keep listening, friend.
Not yet. I will return.
entry #3 (if q_drd_c_s2w)
*Naldor glances at the seed you carry and shakes his head, unhurried.* Not yet. It is not done with you and you are not done with it. Come back when you have fifteen levels behind you, and we shall hear what the wild has made of you.
reply #6 “Fare you well, Naldor.”
entry #2 (if q_drd_c_s1r)
*He digs in the moss and comes up with a single dark seed, and holds it where the light can find it.* This came off a tree older than the Shire, and older than most of the names in it. It has been waiting a long while and does not mind waiting longer. *He offers it.* Carry it out into the wild lands. Listen as you go. Bring it back to me when you have grown into it, at the fifteenth level. Will you carry it?
Give me the seed. I will carry it and listen.
entry #8
*He folds your fingers shut over the seed himself.* Carry it well, and carry it patient. A thing that has waited an age will not be hurried by you. Come back at fifteen and we shall see it made into something that answers.
Later, Naldor. Keep it safe for now.
entry #1 (if q_drd_c_s1w)
*Naldor turns a beetle off his knee, gently.* Listening, are you -- good; but a seedling hears little and a grown tree hears much. That is not impatience, it is arithmetic. Go into the wild lands and let them work on you. Come back when you have eight levels of the craft behind you, and I will trust you with something old.
reply #6 “Fare you well, Naldor.”
entry #0 (if q_drd_c_off)
*The old Woodman does not look up at once; he is listening to something in the roots. Then he blinks, slow as an owl.* Naldor, they call me here -- the Green, for the moss I sit in. Radagast had the teaching of me, what would stick. *He taps the ground.* The world breathes, you know. Slow. Leaf and root and beast, all turning together, and most folk never hear a note of it. You do. A little. I can see it sitting on you. Will you learn to hear the rest -- take up the Green Listening, and walk a while in it?
I hear a little of it. Teach me to hear the rest.
entry #7
*Naldor knots a cord of woven grass about a round of pale birchwood and hangs it on you.* Taken up, then. The Amulet of the Green Listening -- wear it, and it will quiet the noise in your head enough to hear the wood. Go and walk in it hard; come back at your eighth level and I will trust you with the real work.
The wood keeps its business and I keep mine. Good day.
entry #6
*The old Woodman gives you a civil nod and goes back to watching a line of ants.* Good day to you. I keep the trees hereabouts and my own quiet. The Green Listening is a long slow business and no use at all to folk who have not the ear for it. Go safely, and mind the deep wood after dark.
reply #6 “Fare you well, Naldor.”
