| 1 | Halmir the Grey, keeper of the rolls of the old orders, has named the Shifters' trial. At Beorn's steading in the shadow of the Carrock lies a still pool where the master of the house drinks on four legs as often as two. I am to look into the water wearing another skin -- wild-shaped, a borrowed face over my own -- for the pool shows a true form nothing but itself. The tuft of the first skin the water gives up must go back to Halmir at the Well of Eru. | q_shf_start | |
| 2 | At Beorn's pool my trial was kept rightly -- another skin over my own when I looked into the water -- and the pool gave up a tuft of coarse dark hair, warm as though it remembered being worn: the Tuft of the First Skin. It goes back to Halmir at the Well of Eru. | q_shf_pool | |
| 3 | final | Halmir took the tuft, and it stirred in his palm. The Shifters count me among them now -- those who wear another shape and keep their own name inside it. He gave me the Charm of the Carrock, and Beorn's pool keeps its stillness. | q_shf_finish |
