1Halmir the Grey, keeper of the rolls of the old orders, has told me how a Blackguard's fall is written. In the Keep of Barad-Dur -- the Dark Tower itself -- the instruments of cruelty still stand. I am to lay my hand on the torture-rack there and swear the Black Oath: no quarter given, none asked, the light I once carried spent for good. But I must come to it bleeding, for the oath takes blood freely given or nothing at all. Whatever the iron brands into my hand, I am to carry back to Halmir at the Well of Eru.q_bkg_start
2At the rack in the Keep of Barad-Dur I swore the Black Oath with my own blood on the iron, and something in me turned and did not turn back -- the fall the Black Captain's book is written to remember. A brand of cold black iron came away in my hand. It goes back to Halmir at the Well of Eru.q_bkg_altar
3finalHalmir took the cold brand in both hands, and for a moment his grey cloak seemed greyer still. The Blackguards count me among them now -- the forsworn, the fallen. He gave me the Sigil of the Fallen, which others may know at a distance. What I gave up at the Dark Tower will not come back; but that was the price, and I paid it knowing.q_bkg_finish
