A rune-etched shard of star-iron, warm to the touch, torn from the hoard of a fallen lord of the Elder Days. The smiths of old, it is said, learned to fold such shards into finished work -- coaxing the very lattice of a blade or byrnie to open and admit one enchantment more than the common law of the forge would suffer. It is no charm to be spent on a whim: only a master at a Forge of Wonders can bind it. Lay the piece you would strengthen upon the anvil, keep the rune in your pack, and bid the smith widen its lattice -- the rune is consumed in the working, and that item may thereafter bear one enchantment beyond the common limit, fully lawful and never seized for it. Yet no lattice is boundless. A single item will suffer no more than three such runes before its weave is strained to the utmost; a fourth finds no purchase, and the smith will hand the rune back rather than waste it. The expansion is intrinsic to the item itself -- it endures across the ages, and passes to whatever hand the item passes to.
