Tuft of the First Skin

A tuft of coarse dark hair, warmer and heavier than hair has any right to be, given up by the still pool at Beorn's steading in the shadow of the Carrock. The water parts with it only for one who looks in wearing another skin -- wild-shaped, another face over their own -- and it cannot be set down, sold, or handed off. The skin-changers call it a tuft of the first skin: proof the trial was taken in a borrowed shape, and it means nothing to anyone but Halmir the Grey, who keeps the skin-changers' page on his roll of the old orders.
