A short bar of iron burned black, still cold no matter how long it is held, marked with a brand the torture-racks of Barad-Dur press into whatever is laid on them. It came away in your hand when you swore the Black Oath with your own blood on the iron -- the moment something in you turned and did not turn back. It is proof of the fall, and it means nothing to anyone but Halmir the Grey, who keeps the Blackguards' page and writes the fallen down by name.
